Saudi Arabian Airlines’ history begins in 14 February 1945 when the U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt gifted a single twin-engine DC-3 (Dakota) HZ-AAX to King Abdul Aziz. The DC-3 was used on routes between Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran and carried both passengers as well as cargo. Within a month later, two more DC-3 were purchased by Saudi Arabia.
In the year 1946, Saudi Airlines was set up as an operating agency of the Ministry of Defense.
